The instant I saw "Lord of Cinder" pop up it just felt like "oh no". Some elements were new, different, but I was just really disappointed with how the main thrust was "DS1, again". But instead the main story just felt like a big retreading of DS1. Deliver something cool and really memorable that changed my perception of it. My single greatest hope for DS3 pre-release was that the entire story of the game would contain a huge twist that would really blow me away. Especially with the preceding section being done so well and feeling way more distinct to DS3 - the Twin Princes fight perfectly capturing the "let it die" aspect which was more unique to DS3. I was just so miffed that instead of some exciting twist the entire last boss, the entire final sequence, is a giant pile of fanservice. The way Soul of Cinder was designed, the whole concept of his fight, is what single-handedly made my feelings on the game go from unsure to decidedly disappointed, with that particular aspect of it - the overall story. Not that there aren't some, but for me the balance was too much in the rehash corner. Instead I would have liked to see more original concepts and twists. I think the game would have been better if they didn't try to shove in so much fanservice. Rather than the fanservice lifting the game up, it just annoyed me almost everywhere it showed up and actively detracted from those parts of the game. I'm intrigued to hear the outlook of those at this subreddit, so comment and let me know.įor me, yes, there was. That is disappointing because it puts into perspective just how much content in the game is simply slightly altered or copied from older games, Dark Souls 1 in particular.

Without these nostalgic aspects would the game still stand on its own or would it fall short? Personally, I find that the game would still be acceptable and enjoyable, albeit not at the same scale that it is now. Did the amount of fan service within the game affect the quality and enjoyment of the game outside of throwbacks? Was it over saturated with nostalgia? Things such as Anor Londo complete with the archers, Soul of Cinder phase 2, being able to use the bonfire sword, Firelink Shrine and various NPCs from Dark Souls 1 such as the blacksmith, Siegward being very similar to Siegmeyer, Solaire's armor and weapons, and so forth. Now that the first DLC is out and the game has been released for over 6 months now, I'd say the honeymoon phase is over and a informed discussion can be had about this.
